Information Hiding: Steganography & Digital Watermarking

Information Hiding: Steganography & Digital Watermarking

Steganography applications conceal information in other, seemingly innocent media. Steganographic results may masquerade as other file for data types, be concealed within various media, or even hidden in network traffic or disk space. We are only limited by our imagination in the many ways information and data can be exploited to conceal additional information. For many years Information Hiding has captured the imagination of researchers. Digital watermarking and steganography techniques are used to address digital rights management, protect information, and conceal secrets. Information hiding techniques provide an interesting challenge for digital forensic investigations. Information can easily traverse through firewalls undetected. Research into steganalysis techniques aids in the discovery of such hidden information as well as leads research toward improved methods for hiding information.
Related research themes include: anonymous communications, anonymous online transactions, covert channels in computer systems, covert/subliminal communications, detection of hidden information (steganalysis), digital forensics, information hiding aspects of privacy, steganography, subliminal channels in cryptographic protocols, watermarking for protection of intellectual property, and other applications.
JJTC was honored to co-host the 8th International Information Hiding Conference (IH2006) in Old Town Alexandria, USA - held 10-12 July, 2006 . (See more information about the Information Hiding conference from other years).
Dr. Neil F. Johnson began investigating steganography tools and techniques in 1995. His passion and interest in the topic lead to a Ph.D. and continued post-doc research. See some of his publications on:
  • Steganography
  • Steganalysis
  • Countermeasures to cttacks against steganography and watermarking (includes identifying fingerprints of images for recogntion and tracking)
Visit Dr. Johnson's research and publications for a more complete listing of his work including references for:
  • Conference Papers
  • Journal Papers, Technical Reports, and Articles
  • Books: Chapters and Articles
  • Invited Talks, Lectures, and Presentations
  • Press Releases and Interviews
One of the many resources Neil had developed over the years includes a Digital Image Steganography and Digital Watermarking Tool Table. An updated version of this table is Steganography Tools - authors may submit software to be included.
Another resource for those interested in learning more about steganography and digital watermarking topics is Watermarking World. This site serves as a a meeting point for people working in the field of digital watermarking. Information and services on the WatermarkingWorld include: Watermarking Mailing List, watermarking webring, test data, FAQ, Links, bibliography
